New this year to UW-Green Bay and the Center is something called Lavender Graduation. This ceremony is held specifically for LGBTQ folks, their families, and their allies. The ceremony recognizes queer graduating students and their achievements in leadership and LGBTQ activism.

Lavender Graduation, this year, will be taking place on Wednesday, April 18th and will be held in the Phoenix BC room in the Union.

For more information on how to nominate individuals or questions about attendance, here is the link to the nomination form and to more information on those coordinating the event.

Good news!

Some steps forward for justice in marriage equality!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/08/washington-gay-marriage_n_1264038.html

Washington state lawmakers voted to approve gay marriage Wednesday, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to wed.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/07/proposition-8-california-same-sex-marriage-ban-ruling_n_1260171.html

Same-sex marriage moved one step closer to the Supreme Court on Tuesday when a federal appeals court ruled California’s ban unconstitutional, saying it serves no purpose other than to “lessen the status and human dignity” of gays.

Hello again everyone,

We have a Facebook page now! Go over there and like us at www.facebook.com/uwgbpridecenter.com!

Also, soon, our hours will be changing in the center. It’s just a matter of getting all the people that we have that were interested in having hours here together and finally hammering out a schedule. For right now, the hours that I posted in the post before this one still stand.

Some updates on events on UWGB’s campus:

SAGA, the Sexuality and Gender Alliance here on campus, has gotten a group together to head off to MBLGTACC 2012 (http://www.mblgtacc2012.org/) this weekend (2/10-2/12) in Ames, Iowa. If you’re interested in joining the group and going to the conference next year, bring your fundraising ideas to the meetings! They will be at OrgSmorg February 8th, 11-2 PM in the Phoenix Rooms with more info on meeting dates and times, and will have a sign up sheet for those interested in receiving emails from SAGA.

SAGA is also putting together a Burlesque/Drag Show for February! Here’s the Facebook page with all the info: http://www.facebook.com/uwgbpridecenter?sk=wall#!/events/215105325242598/

On February 27, Dr. Christine Smith and LGBTQ center intern Miranda Seitz will be facilitating a showing of Paris is Burning in the Christie Theater at 6PM for the Black History Month series at UWGB.

Jennie Livingston’s Paris is Burning chronicles the queer people of color underclass in New York City in the early ‘80s. Livingston provides a rare look into the history of Madonna’s “voguing,” the American AIDS epidemic of the ‘80s, and what queer Brown and Black youth did to stay together and alive in the communities that shunned them. Discussion to follow the documentary. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Is_Burning_(film)

So far, that’s all we have for campus events for the month of February. There will be another post for March, and also, give us some comments either here or on Facebook on what you’d like to see from the center in the years to come.

Thanks and have a wonderful rest of the week!

Hello everyone!

Hello everyone, and welcome to the new blog for the LGBTQ Resource Center at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay!

Considering how our center is only a few months old, a lot of our work will be aimed towards getting the physical center up and running with the things we need to reach out to, inform, and successfully interact with queer students on this campus. We have our space, and it is mostly decorated (though that’s variable as well because we’ve got a chalkboard wall). We’ve had a few books donated as well.

So far, there’s a lot that’s still to be done, but we do have interns and staff in the office:

Monday: 1:00 PM-5:00 PM

Tuesday: 11:00 PM-4:00 PM

Wednesday: 4:30 PM-8:00 PM

Thursday: 1:00 PM-5:00 PM

Friday: 12:00 PM-2:00 PM

So stop in to just hang out or if there are issues or concerns that need to be addressed, personal or otherwise, please stop in.

Thank you!
